In pictures: a cicada sheds its skin – Australian Geographic
Not sure why editors, when presented with images of a Cicada moulting, always insist on spinning them around so that the Cicada looks to be standing upright. It has happened every single time these photos have been published! The fact is a Cicada needs to be hanging vertically to split open it’s skin (that’s why you usually find the empty shell hanging on the side of tree trunks) and push out of its exoskeleton and part of that process is the insect leaning right back – and staying in that position for sometime – prior to doing a ‘sit up’ and releasing itself from its old skin.
Still, not going to lie, being featured in Australian Geographic was bucket list stuff!
